The Benefits of Flossing vs. Brushing

Los Angeles, California

We all know that brushing your teeth twice a day, or if possible after every meal, is an important part of good dental hygiene. After all, it’s a daily habit we were likely taught as children.

Flossing, however, may be one of those tasks you tend to skip when you’re busy. Or maybe you have yet to make it a daily habit. The truth is, though, that flossing is just as important as brushing, if you want to keep your teeth healthy for life.

At Los Angeles’ Unique Dental Experience,® Dr. Dell Goodrick and his staff are pleased to work with patients to make flossing a dental hygiene priority. Why? Because even though our state-of-the-art dental office is one of the most relaxing settings for receiving dental care, we hope our patients only need to see us twice a year, for regular cleanings and checkups.

Dr. Goodrick is a huge fan of electric toothbrushes and highly recommends Sonicare oscillating/pulsating brushes for optimal teeth cleaning; these brushes offer distinct advantages over traditional tooth brushes.

Why Flossing Is Important

Regular flossing is a key part of oral healthcare because, unlike brushing, it removes built-up plaque that collects between teeth and at the gum line. In fact, without flossing, about 30 percent of your teeth will not be cleaned by brushing alone.

More Reasons to Floss

  • Flossing plays a major role in preventing gum disease, which can eventually lead to serious infection and even tooth loss
  • Flossing gives you better breath because it removes odor-causing bacteria that brushing doesn’t touch
  • Flossing is the only way to remove the plaque between teeth that irritates gum tissue
  • Flossing helps to eliminate gum inflammation and bleeding

Flossing Basics

Dr. Goodrick suggests that you floss at least once a day. If you feel it is too time-consuming to floss all of your teeth at once, consider flossing your upper teeth in the morning and the lower teeth at night. Do whatever it takes to make it a daily task, as essential as brushing your teeth.

If you find flossing difficult, please talk with us to see how we can help. Tip: The American Dental Association has an online video that shows the proper way to floss.

Of course, another important part of good dental health is to schedule your twice-a-year regular checkups. If you reside in the Los Angeles area, please contact the office of Dr. Dell Goodrick at the Unique Dental Experience.®
