Dental crowns and tooth bonding are both used to correct problems people have with their teeth. Dental crowns are used as a way to restore the look and function of a tooth that has been damaged as a result of decay, old restoration, or physical breaking. Tooth bonding is used to correct teeth that have become broken or stained.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are used for a variety of different purposes. If you have a tooth that has become damaged as a result of excessive decay, trauma, or old restorations, a porcelain crown can restore both the look and function of your teeth.
Dental crowns are one of the best ways to restore your damaged teeth without sacrificing the appearance of your smile like older metal crowns. Los Angeles Dentist, Dr. Goodrick chooses to exclusively use dental crowns at A Unique Dental Experience® because they look and function better than the old metal crowns.
Having a porcelain crown placed by Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Goodrick begins with an initial consultation. During your initial dentistry consultation you will be able to speak with Dr. Goodrick about the best restoration available for your teeth.
If it turns out that you need to have a crown rather than a white or porcelain filling, then Dr. Goodrick will begin by preparing your tooth for the crown. In order for your crown to be placed, the top portion of your tooth is sculpted so that the porcelain crown can fit over the top of it.
Once the tooth has been prepared for the dental crown, Dr. Goodrick will make an impression of the tooth and send it to a dental lab where your custom porcelain crown will be created.
While your porcelain crown is being created, you will be fitted with a temporary crown. When the porcelain crown returns from the dental lab, Dr. Goodrick will invite you back to his office where the temporary will be removed and the porcelain crown will be bonded to your tooth.
To bond the crown to your tooth, Dr. Goodrick will brush on a bonding agent and then place the porcelain crown over the top of the tooth. Then he will then use a special high-intensity light to cure the bonding agent and permanently affix the porcelain crown to the natural structure of your tooth.
A porcelain crown fits over the top of the tooth covering the remaining portion of the natural tooth structure and restoring the look and function of the tooth.
A porcelain crown strengthens the decayed tooth so that you can eat and smile without having to think about the pain of a damaged tooth or the appearance of metal in your mouth.
Unlike metal crowns, porcelain dental crowns match the size, shape, color, and translucency of the rest of your teeth. Many people not only choose porcelain over metal crowns because they match the color and translucency of natural teeth, but they also choose to have their older crowns or fillings replaced with porcelain dental crowns.
Tooth Bonding
Tooth bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure performed to correct damage to teeth. Tooth bonding can correct many of the same problems porcelain veneers can correct, but instead of being performed on many teeth, it is usually only performed on one or two.
Tooth bonding can correct:
- Chipped Teeth
- Stained or Discolored Teeth
- Gaps in Teeth
- Broken Teeth
- Disfigured Teeth
- Misshaped Teeth
- Cracked Teeth
A tooth bonding procedure is quick, and unlike porcelain veneers, it can be finished in just one visit to A Unique Dental Experience®. Tooth bonding is an excellent option if you have a couple teeth that need to be repaired or whitened because of permanent staining or discoloring.
Tooth bonding is a composite resin that is placed by Dr. Goodrick to perfectly match the color of your teeth. It can also be selected so that it is a whiter color if you have permanent staining.
In order to have tooth bonding, you must schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Goodrick. During the initial consultation, Dr. Goodrick will evaluate your teeth and make sure tooth bonding is the best restoration for you. He will also inform you about the tooth bonding procedure so that you can have realistic expectations of the results you will have.
If it is determined that tooth bonding is the right cosmetic dentistry option for you, Dr. Goodrick will place the tooth bonding so that it matches the appearance of your teeth and apply it in several layers to the natural surface of your teeth.
After the tooth bonding has been sculpted so that it matches the size and shape of the rest of your teeth, it is cured. Tooth bonding is cured with a special high-intensity light that hardens the composite resin material and allows you to function normally with your bonded teeth.
