What is laser dentistry?

Through cutting-edge technology, laser dentistry offers a safe, pain-free way to perform a number of dental treatments, from treating periodontal disease to detecting cavities.

A laser, whether used in dentistry or other types of medical fields, is a high-tech tool that emits a precise, concentrated light beam of light at a specific wavelength to affect soft tissue, bone and even tooth enamel.

At the Los Angeles dental office of Dr. Dell Ariel Goodrick, laser dentistry is just one more way we provide our patients with the absolute best in high-tech dentistry solutions, particularly ones that make going to the dentist comfortable and stress-free.

Is laser dentistry safe?

Yes. Laser dentistry has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on children and adults. Plus, lasers can actually reduce the chance of an injury to areas of the mouth surrounding the target treatment area, since it is such an exact instrument.

Why is laser dentistry considered pain-free?

Unlike traditional dentist drills, hard tissue lasers do not vibrate, which means no discomfort from friction. In addition, with a laser, there is no cutting or potential bruising of tissue. So, an area can be treated virtually painlessly.

What are other benefits of laser dentistry?

In addition to being painless and more comfortable for patients, lasers also typically generate very minimal bleeding, if any, and treatment areas tend to heal quickly. There is no unsettling noise, as with the dentist drill. Also, because lasers immediately sterilize the treated area, there is a reduced risk of infection.

Are lasers a substitute for the drill in all cases?

Not in all instances. Lasers can be used to detect and treat cavities, contour and reshape gum tissue, treat areas of gum disease, treat cold sores and fever blisters, and even remove frenum tissue. But not all procedures can be carried out with a laser, and not all patients and dental concerns are good candidates for laser treatments.

Only a qualified dentist who is experienced in laser dentistry, like Laser Dentist, Dr. Goodrick, can evaluate your individual situation to determine if the use of a laser will offer the kind of treatment and healing you need. He has achieved Fellowship status with the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD), the largest international organization devoted to laser dentistry.
