Common TMJ Symptoms
Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Clarita, Pasadena
TMJ is a problem that is identified because of the symptoms associated with it. By correcting or treating your TMJ and realigning your temporomandibular joint, you can stop the painful and problematic TMJ symptoms. TMJ symptoms include:
Headaches and Migraines – TMJ can cause headaches that are so severe and chronic that they feel like migraines. TMJ headaches are caused by excess strain on muscles and nerves surrounding the temporomandibular joint.
Clicking and Popping Noises in the Jaw – If you can hear clicking and popping in your jaw when you open and close it, it can be a sign that you are suffering from TMJ. While this may not seem like a big deal, it can signal that more serious symptoms can arise in the future.
Facial and Neck Pain – The temporomandibular joint is surrounded by muscles that stretch to your face and neck. If you are suffering from TMJ it can cause serious pain all over your head, by treating TMJ, you can alleviate much of the pain you are experiencing.
Ringing in the Ears – This is also referred to as tinnitus. TMJ can cause your ears to ring because it puts excess strain on all areas of your face, head, and neck. This means that when you have TMJ, it can affect the nerves in your ears, causing them to ring.
Grinding Teeth – Grinding your teeth is called bruxism, and TMJ can cause it. If you have TMJ, you can begin to grind your teeth as a way to alleviate pain, or to adjust your bite. Treating your TMJ can stop you from grinding your teeth and prevent other dental problems that grinding teeth causes.
Chipped/Broken/Cracked/Worn Teeth – All of these are signs that you are grinding or clenching your teeth. While you may not do this during the day, you may be doing it at night when you sleep. Treating TMJ will stop you from grinding or clenching your teeth when you sleep.
Locking Jaw – TMJ can cause your jaw to lock when it is open. Some people are able to correct this problem by forcing their jaw close or by shaking their head. Treating your TMJ will stop your jaw from locking.
